LO2: Social Media Globalisation and Moral Panics

Moral Panic- When the mass media stir something up on something that may have a negative impact on society e.g. saying something is bad for society. Stanley Cohen (1972)
Folk Devil- Demonising one.

How can this be linked to the use of new technologies and society?
Social media leads to grooming, taking photos that may negatively be used, revenge porn.
Cyber-bullying - Bullying behind screens. Trollying online - constant bullying.
Self-Harm
Promting Anorexia
Destroying Careers- People dont see the negative impact of social media.

What media text and technologies have caused a moral panic?
GTA - drugs, prostitutes, steal cars
Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter
Fast and Furious

http://www.spiked-online.com/newsite/article/the_hysteria_over_trolls_is_a_classic_moral_panic/13890

  • This article is present the impact that moral panic is having
'A moral panic occurs, he said, when ‘a condition, episode, person or group of persons become defined as a threat to societal values and interests’. A moral crusade, fuelled by ‘media sensationalism’, is then launched against these allegedly threatening ‘deviants’, he said, until they loom large in the public mind as ‘folk devils’ whose behaviour poses a threat to public safety or moral norms.'

I agree with moral panic through ways in which social media can be negative for you rather than positive.Cyber-bullying /Trolling.
